What Qualifies as a Pet Emergency?
You know your pet best—but if you’re ever unsure, it’s better to be safe and get them checked. Common signs that your pet may need immediate care include:
- Pale or blue gums
- Rapid or labored breathing
- Weak or racing pulse
- Seizures
- Loss of consciousness
- Inability to stand
- Excessive bleeding
- Hit by a car or trauma
- Suspected poisoning
- Sudden, severe pain
- Vomiting or diarrhea with blood
How to Safely Transport an Injured Pet
Even the gentlest pet may bite or lash out when in pain. Here are a few tips for safely getting them to us:
- Large dogs: Use a towel or blanket as a stretcher, and try to keep their neck and spine stable.
- Cats or small pets: Gently cover their head with a towel to prevent bites, and place them in an open-topped box or carrier.
- Bleeding wounds: Apply firm, steady pressure with a clean cloth or bandage while on your way to our hospital.
